WORKING TIME

8 ½" x 14," 28 pages

Black and White, Sharp SF 8500, Permalife Bond, Green Vinyl, Fabric Cover,
Signed and Numbered Edition

1994

In Working Time , Gilbert explores the notion of job, security, and human worth. This work was created after Gilbert lost her job of many years. Here personal hardship becomes politicized - her hands are our hands, enclosed in their grip are questions what we do, why we do it, for whom. The localized phenomenon of Gilbert's temporary unemployment broaches the topic of joblessness in general. By manifesting a cultural trend in a personal way, Gilbert literally embodies the problem - taking it to heart and bringing us with her.
