Dear Gabrielle,

I was just introduced to your piece by my friend, Roger Lipman. He responded to it and spoke so highly of it that I wanted to read it myself. My own mother has had Alzheimer's disease for about 7 years and I have been watching her decline. While she was quite physical with my brother and me as we grew, her touch, as you describe in your essay, has become increasingly rigid and infrequent over the years. The fingers on her left hand are continually clenched tightly in a fist; it is almost impossible to pierce them. I was both moved and comforted by your heartfelt essay. Thank you.

Thank you, Gabrielle for a story that not only tells me more about that delicious mother of yours, whom I knew, but share so wonderfully your own particular delight in her exoticism. This piece appreciates everything about her, even her selfishness. And as an artist/mother myself it gives me hope...

Dear Gabrielle,

This is a very powerful and evocative piece, how we never stop searching for what we missed, even as we come to terms with it and the complexities of a parent's love. I like the essay and your writing very much.

Gabrielle,

Congratulations on a powerfully moving story which brought me to tears. Your style is so accessible, so easy and fluid while the tales own undercurrent effortlessly sweeps the reader along. I look forward to more articles from you and than you for sharing this.

This is a powerful and compassionate portrait of your mother; her hands seem to be startling metaphor for all her complexities and ultimately of her love for you. You are a gifted writer; this is a courageous piece. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.

Gabrielle, I love the intergenerational observations on the nature of our hands and their power to let us connect. You paint a portrait of our hands as markers of our changing relationships - that turning of the tables when we must begin to care for our parents.
