Thanks, Jeffe. Your description of how the retroreflective aimer works: "you can see the shaft of light that way" is excellent - I hadn't heard it described that way before. The diagram here: http://www.equipped.org/phony_signal_mirrors.htm explains the aimer from an optical point of view. That article also points out why REI is a safer place to buy signal mirrors these days - many surplus stores are supplied with "lookalikes" whose grids don't display the shaft of light. I asked because a hobby of mine is public education on signal mirrors, and one comment I get is: "I've never heard about anyone being rescued because of a signal mirror." So, I collect examples. Thanks again, and glad it worked out for you. Of course, these days, you can have a personal locator beacon with you to call for help day or night, rain or shine.

Hi, Richard: It happened in June, 1985. I used one of those smaller sized signal mirrors available at REI or surplus stores. Directions are on the back of the mirrors, but basically you look thru the hole in the middle from the back towards where you're aiming...you can see the shaft of light that way. Just put the shaft on your target...boom. (In this case, I also saw the reflection off the fuselage. Hope that helps.

When did this incident occur?

What sort of signal mirror did you use?
(dimensions, material, aiming method)

Thanks!
