Beautifully written. MFK Fisher's work always breaks my heart because behind all those delicious recipes and leisurely essays about eating is her yearning to feed, love and be loved. Her essays always ring true and make me pause---as does your piece. I also love your anecodote about trying to raise sea monkeys in splendor!

That was a beautiful piece of writing. I read it through tears in my eyes because it brought back a period of time 35 years ago that I devoured all the Fisher's books in print. And it was done in her spirit. Really good structure and philosophy.

Lee, I loved the way you started with your mother as cook and moved into a larger canvas, the world of food writing and food preparing as art.

What a delightful piece! It makes me hungry for something altogether more substantial than "just" food.
